Pure “performance” Culture with Strong Goal orientation Can Undermine Collaboration on projects

Highly competitive or “performance-prove” orientations can reduce:

  • knowledge sharing

  • cooperation

  • trust

  • collaborative problem-solving

particularly when interpersonal conflict is present.

A good PM ought to be able to challenge ideas while preserving relationships. For a combative PM, any disagreement becomes interpersonal positioning. That creates defensive behaviour:

  • suppliers hide issues

  • teams stop escalating risks early

  • people become compliance-oriented rather than contribution-oriented

Ironically, this usually reduces project performance over time.
